Kneading Conference Brings Bakers, Grain Enthusiasts to Skowhegan

The Maine Grain Alliance recently welcomed bakers, grain enthusiasts, and food professionals from around the world to Skowhegan for its 19th annual Kneading Conference.

Held over three days, the conference featured more than 30 workshops exploring baking, grain production, milling, and other aspects of the local and regional grain economy.

The conference concluded Friday with a five-course grain pairing at the Skowhegan Biergarten, featuring combinations of bread, cheese, and beer. The event highlighted locally sourced wheat, barley, and rye from producers across Maine.

Beyond celebrating Maine’s grain economy, the Kneading Conference also brings an important economic boost to Skowhegan. Each year, attendees, presenters, and visitors spend several days in the area, supporting local lodging, restaurants, shops, and other businesses. Events like the Kneading Conference demonstrate how Skowhegan’s growing reputation as a destination for local food, agriculture, and entrepreneurship can translate into increased visitation and economic activity throughout the community.

While food and craft are central to the gathering, organizers say the connections created among participants are just as important.

“The best part of the festival every year are the people who come,” Maine Grain Alliance Executive Director Tristan Noyes told WABI TV, noting that conversations among the conference’s international and returning participants help shape what comes next for bread and beer.

The annual Kneading Conference has become a signature gathering for Maine’s grain community, bringing people together in Skowhegan to share knowledge, build relationships, and celebrate the state’s growing grain economy.

Next up, the Maine Grain Alliance will host the Maine Bagel Off in Brunswick on August 30.
